August 8th Rain Out Make Up

Nuxhall vs Spahn
Brewers 2, Reds 1 (11 innings)

Sitting atop the division with a 1 game lead the Reds could not officially clinch the division until this August 8th rain out was made up.  Milwaukee not only needed to win the game, but they needed to outscore the Reds by 2 in order to win the divisional tie breaker.  It took the great Warren Spahn 11 innings of 5 hit ball to win the game.  Spahn, who threw all 11 innings on 136 pitches finished the season 10-2 (2.36) and is KOD's first official double digit winner ever.  Unfortunately the Brew Crew could not score enough runs to win the tie breaker, but they do comfortably clinch the #1 wild card seed.

M's clinch AL West Flag by splitting 2 with Milwaukee

GAME 1 - County Stadium
Pineiro vs Caldwell
Mariners 8, Brewers 2

The hometown fans surely thought this game was in the bag with ace lefty Mike Caldwell on the hill.  Milwaukee's crafty lefty never got it going and after 4 innings of play the M's had a 5-1 lead and never looked back.  Joel Pineiro (6-2, 1.96) was stellar fanning 7 and giving up just 2 in 7 innings.  Dan Wilson was the man going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's and a bomb.  The M's inch closer to the AL West flag.  The Brew Crew now needs to win the next 3 to take the division.

GAME 2
Moyer vs Sorensen
Brewers 3, Mariners 2

Just in the nick of time Lary Sorensen was resurrected from the dead after 3 brutal stars in his last 4 outings.  Sorensen baffled the M's for 8 1/3 innings before giving way to Bob McClure who got the final2 batters to secure the 1 run win.  Milwaukee rallied back fro a 2-1 deficit with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th then made them stand up the rest of the way.  A lead off homer by Cecil Cooper tied the game, but a 2 out rally was needed to net the next tally.  MVP candidate "Stormin' Gorman Thomas doubled off the wall then scored on Sal Bando's single.  The game was a nail biter down to the final out.  After Edgar Martinez led off the 9th with a double Cameron grounded out to third.  Pinch hitter Bloomquist was given an intentional pass to create a DP scenario.  McClure came on and did his magic by getting pinch hitter Ruben "High" Sierra to fly out to left and pinch hitter Desi Relaford to ground to short to end it.

GAME 3
Augustine vs Halama
Brewers 11, Mariners 5

A typically Jerry Augustine run fest saw the M's on the short side of the ledger.  Seattle used 6 pitchers and Milwaukee made each and everyone of them pay to erase an early 3-1 M's lead.  Gorman Thomas, who looks more and more like an MVP each day, hit 2 long balls to bust the game open and tie Joe DiMaggio for the league lead with 22 each.  Thomas had 4 RBI's.  Every Brewer had a hit with Don Money and Charlie Moore each having 3.  Larry Hisle and Edgar Martinez each had a round tripper.  The latter knocked in 3 with his clout in a losing effort.

GAME 4
Travers vs Garcia
Mariners 6, Brewers 4

Once again Freddy Garcia (8-1, 3.93), who gets the most run support in the league, strolled to victory and the division title behind an offense that posted 6 runs.  Milwaukee lefty Bill Travers was the victim of 3 errors as 4 of the 6 runs that he allowed were of the unearned variety.  John Olerud's (2-3, 2 RBI, 3 R) 2 homers were the difference maker.  Sasaki posted his 15th save as the M's celebrated the AL West division title in grand style on their home field.  Congrats to manager Andy Weinrib on a super season piloting the M's to the Division Crown.

KOD17 - KC and Baltimore

Due to technical difficulties, these games were played computer versus manager.
Orioles finished winning 2 of 3 from the Royals to finish at 24 - 25.
game 1
Orioles 3 Royals 1 .... Adair's rbi single in 7th inning broke a 1 all tie and Orioles went on to win game 1.  Lou Jackson's pinch hit rbi single added an insurance run in the 7th.  Barber started the game for the Orioles but disappeared in the 2nd inning (I assume there was an injury but no statement appeared to confirm this) and Bunker came on to pitch 5.2 innings allowing only 1 run.  Hall came on for the save.
game 2
Orioles 3 Royals 2 (11 innings) .... Boog Powell homered with 1 out in bottom of 11th to give Orioles the win. Royals had lead 2 - 1 going into the 9th on Balboni's rbi double in in 1st inning and Orta's pinch hit single in 6th. Orioles tied game in 9th on single to Aparicio, a sac bunt and then rbi single by Brooks Robinson.
game 3
Royals 3 Orioles 0 ....  Leibrandt went the distance pitching a 5 hit shutout, striking out 5 and walking 3.  Balboni's rbi double in 7th snapped scoreless tie and Willie Wilson's 2 run single in 8th provided insurance.

Lawrence tosses great performance.
Game 1,
at San Diego,

Brooks Lawrence was in full control of this match as he earned his 7th win of the season with a sterling complete game victory. Lawrence scattered 8 hits and 2 runs over the course of the game. The Red bats were on fire as the crushed four homeruns off Padre starter Andy Benes and for good measure, they hit another dinger off reliever Jose Melendez.  Frank Robinson collected 3 hits including a homerun to lead the way. Ed Bailey added two homeruns during the game to help support the offense. Reds 6  Padres 2.

Game 2,

The Padres paid back the Reds big time in the second game of the series. It was a flip flop performance of the first game. This time it was a Padre hurler tossing the gem. Bruce Hurse went the distance to finish the season at 6-4 with a sparkling 2.93 ERA.  Hurst struck out 6 Red batters and kept them off balance the whole game. However the story of the game was the Friar Bats.  San Diego hit 6 homeruns in the game as balls were flying out of Jack Murphy Stadium.  Fred McGriff hit two(# 7,8), Tim Teufel connected for a pair (#3,4) and Darrin Jackson hit two more( #9,10). Fred McGriff went 4 for 4 with 3 RBI in the contest. Padres 9   Reds 2.
Crime Dog fights crime with 2 dingers.

Game 3,
at Crosley Field,

Joe Nuxhall and Don Gross combined for a shut out as the series continued in Cincinnati.  Nuxhall went the first 7.2 innings surrendering 8 hits. When Nuxhall's stuff went flat, Don Gross came in to mop up the final inning and a third. More homeruns were hit in this game as Frank Robinson, Gus Bell, and Ted Kluszewski all went yard in this one sided affair.  Padre curve ball specialist Greg Harris got the start and was battered for 6 runs over 7 innings and fell to 3-2. Nuxhall improved to 3-2. Reds 6  Padres 0.

Game 4,

Ted Kluszewski connected for his 15th homerun of the season in the first inning off Padre starter Adam Peterson to lead the Reds to a third victory of this 4 game set.  However the Reds really pounded reliever Rich Rodriguez as they roughed him up for 9 runs over 2.1 innings pitched. To Rodriquez's credit, not all the runs were his doing as Padre shortstop Craig Shipley committed two costly errors to make 5 of those runs unearned.  Tom Acker evened his record to 1-1 with 6 solid innings of work.  Gus Bell collected 4 hits and drove in 3 in the game to blow out the Friars in the finale of the season.  Reds 11  Padres 1.

Bosox and A’s Split Season Finale

As the season entered its final series, Boston and Philadelphia both had reasons to want to win the series.  For the A’s, who were trailing Boston by 2 games, it meant a chance to hopefully move into a tie or outright 1st place in the division; for Boston, who was leading Tampa Bay by a game, it meant securing first place with a sweep or at least increasing the pressure on the Rays by not losing the series.  Whatever the reasons both teams needed to win and there is NO DOUBT they game to play.  There were no “prisoners taken” in this series.

Game 1
Shibe Park
Dobson vs Grove
Philadelphia  9   Boston  1

The A’s Lefty Grove was the MVP of this game.  All his pitches were working and inning after inning he confused the Boston hitters.  Although he walked 4 batters in the first 4 innings none of the runners came close to scoring.  It wasn’t until Johnny Pesky singled with 2 outs in the 6th inning that Boston saw its 1st hit of the game and only a Billy Goodman RBI double in the 8th prevented Grove from a complete game 4 hit shutout.  Conversely, Boston’s Joe Dobson never found his groove and was on the short end of the score after 3 innings, 5-0, with Al Simmons hitting a 2 run homer in the first to start it all.  Max Bishop had 3 hits and 3 runs scored while Simmons connected on 2 two run HR to account for his 4 RBI and raise his league leading batting average to .410.  Philadelphia takes game 1, 9-1.

Game 2
Shibe Park
Kinder vs Walberg
Boston  4   Philadelphia  1

It was like the two teams changed uniforms from the previous day.  This time it was the Bosox who had the better pitching and enough hitting to even the series.  Like the day before when Al Simmons unloaded a 2 run HR for the early A’s lead, this game it was Boston’s “Splendid Splinter” Ted Williams who did the same for a Boston 2 run lead after 1 inning.  This time Ellis Kinder imitated Lefty Grove of the previous day as he set the A’s down on 4 hits through 6 innings.  Dom DiMaggio hit a 2 run HR in the 7th to give Boston a 4 run cushion and when Kinder tired in the 9th Harry Taylor came on to get the last 2 outs and earn the save as Boston tied the series 1-1.  Al Simmons went hitless in 4 AB and his average dropped to .397.

Game 3
Fenway Park
Ehmke vs Stobbs
Boston  22   Philadelphia  10

The ERA’s took a beating for both teams in this one and it didn’t take long for the fireworks to begin.  The visiting A’s scored 3 times in the top of the 1st on a walk, double, 2 singles and an error.  The Red Sox countered that with 5 of their own in the bottom of the inning on a single, 2 triples and a 2 run Vern Stephens HR.  Philadelphia then had RBI singles from Jimmy Foxx and Zach Wheat in the 2nd inning to tie the score at 5 apiece.  Both teams took a breather in the 3rd inning before Boston once again went to town with a triple, 2 doubles, a single, hit batter and SF that resulted in 4 runs and 9-5 lead after 4 innings.  Boston continued the onslaught with 3 spots in both the 5th and 6th innings and Philadelphia added its own 3 spot in the top of the 6th.  Boston led 15-8 after 7.  The A’s scored 2 more in the 8th to cut the score to 15-10.  However, in the bottom of the 8th the A’s pitching finished unraveling when Boston scored 7 runs on 3 hits, 4 walks and an error that ended the scoring and gave Boston a wild 22-10 win.  The hitting stars for Boston were Al Zarilla who went a perfect 6-6 and Walt Dropo who went 4-4.  DiMaggio and Zarilla, the first 2 batters in the Boston lineup, accounted each scored 5 runs to account for 10 of the 22 the Bosox scored.  Dropo lead the team with 5 RBI.  Boston had 10 extra base hits including 4 doubles, 5 triples and a HR.  Al Simmons went 2 for 5 to raise his average to .397 with one game to go in his quest for that elusive .400 BA.

Game 4
Fenway Park
Quinn vs Masterson
Philadelphia  15   Boston  8

The A’s scored single runs in the 2nd and 5th innings to take a 2-0 lead before Boston scored 6 highlighted by a 3 run Verns Stephens HR that gave Boston what looked to be a comfortable 6-2 lead after 5.  No lead was safe in this series as the A’s scored 3 in the 6th lead by a Mickey Cochrane 2 run HR.  Philadelphia took the lead with 2 in the 7th and the Red Sox added 1 in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 7.  Finally the Boston bullpen, which has been the team’s weak link, imploded in the 8th when they gave up 6 runs on 5 singles, a double, a hit batter and 2 wild pitches to give Philadelphia a 13-7 lead.  Boston did get one back in the 8th but the A’s added 2 more in the 9th to complete the scoring and give Philadelphia a series split with Boston.  Zach Wheat had 5 hits with 3 runs and 3 RBI.  Boston’s Billy Goodman finished 4-4.  As for Al Simmons, he completed a magical season by going 4 for 6 to achieve that magical milestone and finish the season with a .409 BA.

Dem Bums make late run at div flag by taking 3 of 4 from Redbirds

GAME 1 - Ebbets Field
Simmons vs Podres
Dodgers 3, Cardinals 1

With the season hanging on the line both teams went to veteran southpaws to start off this all important series.  Both crafty lefties threw up goose eggs until the 6th when the Redbirds struck first on a Ken Boyer sac fly.  Brooklyn answered right back with an RBI single by Gino Cimoli.  With 2 outs Julian Javier booted a hard grounder by Pee Wee Reese which allowed Gil Hodges to score the go ahead run.  With 1 out and 2 on Johnny Podres was dead tired.  Like so many times before Clem Labine was summoned from the pen to put the fire out.  Before he could get settled in he walked pinch hitter and former Dodger Moose Moryn to load the bases with one out.  Next up was right fielder Joe Cunningham, who grounded into a tailor made 6-4-3 DP to end the rally.  Pinch hitter Elmer Valo lined a 1 out single in the bottom of the inning to score Cimoli to make it 3-1.  Labine had a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close the game out.

GAME 2
Kline vs Maglie
Dodgers 14, Cardinals 0

Brooklyn scored early and often thanks to a 24 hit / 14 run outburst.  Everyone got a hit, including starter Sal "The Barber" Maglie, who went 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored.  The only downside of this lopsided victory was the fact that Maglie hurt his arm with 2 outs in the 7th and had to leave the game.  Brooklyn is unsure if he will be healthy enough to make the post season roster, if in the even the Dodgers somehow squeak into the tournament.  Gino Cimoli (4-6) paced an offense that had 5 guys post 3 hits or more.  Roy Campanella, in what just might be his final at bat in front of the home crowd, launched a 3 run homer to blow the game wide open.

GAME 3 - Sportsman's Park
Drysdale vs L.Jackson
Dodgers 5, Cardinals 0

St. Louis' offense woes continued as Big D, Don Drysdale, authored a 3 hit complete game shutout performance.  Big D protected a 2-0 lead until the 8th when the Boys of Summer scored 3 to make it 5-0.  Veteran Gil Hodges had a double and a triple and scored both times.  Larry Jackson was charged with all 5 runs, which obscured the fact that he did fan 11 in 8 innings on the hill.

GAME 4
Erskine vs Broglio
Cardinals 4, Dodgers 2

Brooklyn went for the sweep and put the ball in the hands of a sentimental choice, Carl Erskine.  "Oisk", who has been battling arm trouble for years hoped to turn the clock back for last moment in the sun.  Things started good for him but his 2-1 lead evaporated when the Cards scored 2 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th to take a 4-2 lead, which the stingy Ernie Broglio and the even stingier Lindy McDaniel would never relinquish.  St. Louis scored more runs in game 4 than they scored in the previous 3 games.  Carl Sawatski hit a huge 2 run shot in the 4th to give his team a much needed lead.  Brooklyn managed just 6 hits, with "Skooonj" Furillo, who finished the season hitting .362, accounting for 1/3 of them.  Moose Moryn repaid his former teammates with 2 safeties.  Bill White, who is a gold glover at 1st or center, also had 2 hits.  Stan the Man went 1-3 and finished the year hitting .330.  Brooklyn now sits back and scoreboard watches the Marlins / Pirates series.  If those two teams split there will be a 3 way tie for first place for the NL East.
