Brew Crew and South Siders split 4 game set

GAME 1 - Comiskey
Augustine vs Harshman
White Sox 9, Brewers 8

Putrid efforts by both starters accounted for a 8-6 Chisox lead after 4 innings of play.  Both teams scored 3 runs in the first inning alone.  Milwaukee rallied back to make it 9-8 and almost tied it in the top of the 9th, but came up short when Larry Hisle was nailed out the plate by a Johnny Groth one hop throw.  Gorman Thomas, who leads the league in homers, failed to hit the ball deep enough to tie it.  Both teams combined to split 28 hits evenly.  George Kell (2-4) knocked in 4 of Chicago's 9 runs on the day.

GAME 2
Caldwell vs Pierce
Brewers 2, White Sox 0

In a battle of the lefties Milwaukee's Mike Caldwell (3-1, 1.58) was once again the better hurler.  Caldwell scattered 5 hits enroute to a complete game shutout where he didn't walk or strikeout a batter.  Milwaukee scored both of their runs in the top of the 3rd on Sal Bando's 1 out 2 run single.

GAME 3 - County Stadium
Trucks vs Sorenson
Brewers 7, White Sox 6

Milwaukee scored early and often to amass a 6-0 lead after just 2 innings of play against an ineffective Virgil Trucks.  Lary Sorenson (5-1, 1.98) was not his usual dominating stuff as he fell asleep at the wheel and let the Southsiders creep back into the game.  Leading 7-5 after 8 the Brew Crew brought in Bill Castro to close it out.  Castro needed some smoke and mirrors plus a game saving play at the plate (2nd of the series) to lock down his gift save.  After giving up a leadoff single to Nellie Fox and walking Minnie Minoso, Castro got pinch hitter Cass Michales to pop out.  Johnny Groth followed by fanning for the second out.  Castro needed to get George Kell out to end the game, but instead served up a two bagger that went off the wall in right over the head of Ben Oglive.  The ball carromed around in the corner before Oglive picked it up and hit cutoff man Don Money with a strike.  By this point Fox had scored to make it 7-6 and the Cuban phenom, Minoso, was rounding third.  Money was on the money with a strike to catcher Buck Martinez, who got blasted 3 feet backward by Minoso.  No call was made by the ump until Martinez showed that the ball was still in his hand for the third out.

GAME 4
Consuegra vs Replogle
White Sox 10, Brewers 3

After 3 tight games the 4th and final game of the series was a good ole fashioned blowout.  Chicago victimized spot starter Andy Replogle for 8 runs (7 earned) off of 10 hits in just 6 innings on the hill.  Willie Mueller did the mop up duty and allowed an additional 2 runs over the final 3 stanzas.  Chisox leadoff man Ferris Fain went 4-5 with 2 RBI's and 3 runs scored.  Phil Cavarretta had 3 RBI's himself.  The lone bright spot for Milwaukee was the performance of Gorman Thomas, who hit 2 more homers to increase his league leading total to 13.
