1961 Giants Crush Padres

San Diego,
Game 1,
T.Gwynn collected 4 hits and a dinger.

Tony Gwynn and Fred McGriff hit homeruns to lead the Padres past the Giants. Andy Benes went the distance to improve to 2-4 on the season. Tony Gwynn was 4 for 4. Padres 6....Giants 2.

Game 2,


San Diego touched up Juan Marichal for 5 runs in the first inning but it was not enough for the Padres.  The Giants retaliated with 4 runs of their own in the top half of the second and added two more runs in later in the game.  The Padres were unable to plate another run after the first as Marichal hung around  just long enough ( 5 innings) to move to 4-2.  Stu Miller pitched 3 innings of hit less, score less innings for the save.  Giants 6...Padres 5.

Game 3,
San Francisco,

The Giants tallied solo runs in the 4th, 6th, and 7th frames to edge the Padres at Candlestick.  Jack Sanford pitched 6 innings to up his record to 6-1 on the season.  Bruce Hurst was the hard luck loser and falls to 5-2.  Stu Miller earned his second save in the series and 9th of the season. Giants 3...Padres 1.
Three saves in the series.


Game 4,

San Diego rushed out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the  4th inning but quickly watched their lead evaporate before their very eyes. In the bottom half of the fourth, Mays and McCovey each collected solo homeruns to knot the contest at 2.  The Giants added 3 more runs to take the lead in the seventh inning to run Padre Starter Adam Peterson-who was making his first start of the year.  Mays was the stud of the game with three runs batted in.  The victory went to port sider Mike McCormick who hurled a 3-hit, 2 run game while making it through seven innings.  Stu Miller received his 10th save of the year and 3rd of the series.  Giants  6...Padres 2.
